Current transformers

Instrument transformers and protection transformers (also referred to as protective and relay transformers.) The requirements to these two categories of transformers are completely different and often incompatible.

According to international standards, instrument transformers must be accurate within a range of 1% or 5% to 120% of the rated current. The transformer must reach saturation at a given multiple of the rated current (normally 5 or 10 times I ), so the connected appliance is protected at great overload currents. Instrument transformers are mostly used in the power station sector and by industries to measure, monitor and control electrical outputs. They are manufactured in accuracy classes of 0.1, 0.2S, 0.2, 0.5S, 0.5, 1 and 3.

Quite differently, protection transformers must maintain their rather less accurate transformation ratios at many times the rated current (10, 15, 20 or 30 times I ). Protection transformers for relay purposes are used in connection with protective relays for overcurrent and differential protection. For these transformers, the measuring accuracy is limited at normal current; however, the measuring accuracy must be maintained up to several times the rated current. ransformers for overcurrent protection are produced in accuracy classes of 5P and 10P, while transformers for differential protection are produced in class X (BS 3938 & IS 2907).
